American Made Tools

DeWALT® has announced it will build more than 600 different tools in the United States. Their focus is not on where the materials for the tools come from, but on where the tools are assembled.

The new lines sporting the “Built in the USA” sticker include 32 hand tools, 48 power tools and 562 accessories. DeWALT®, on its website, promises there will be no price increases on the items bearing this logo.

Made In The USAAccording to the website selected products were chosen for a reason, “Cordless products represent a large growth opportunity and are widely used by professional contractors throughout the USA. In order to provide faster response to our customers, we chose to build some of our most popular cordless power tools here in the USA using global materials.” The website also says the 18 and 20 volt products make up the majority of the U.S. market.

Call me a skeptic, but I fail to see how assembling tools in the United States, out of foreign made components, gives the end user a better finished product, than what we have already been purchasing.  And does it really mean these are 100% American made tools?  Yes, it probably moves some assembly jobs back to the U.S., which is all good. It was in 2002 DeWALT ceased all tool manufacturing in the U.S., moving it to Mexico and China.

Don’t get me wrong, I own plenty of DeWALT tools and have never had a problem with their warranty, below:

“Most DEWALT® Tools purchased on or after January 1, 2004 come with a warranty package that includes:

Three-Year Limited Warranty

DEWALT will repair, without charge, any defects due to faulty materials or workmanship for three years from the date of purchase. This warranty does not cover part failure due to normal wear or tool abuse. For further detail of warranty coverage and warranty repair information, visit www.dewalt.com or call 1-800-4-DEWALT (1-800-433-9258). This warranty does not apply to accessories or damage caused where repairs have been made or attempted by others. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights which vary in certain states or provinces.

One-Year Free Service Contract

DEWALT will maintain the tool and replace worn parts caused by normal use, for free, any time during the first year after purchase.

90-Day Money Back Guarantee.

If you are not completely satisfied with the performance of your DEWALT Power Tool, Laser, or Nailer for any reason, you can return it within 90 days from the date of purchase with a receipt for a full refund – no questions asked.”

My issue here is there will be people who will purchase these tools with the “Built in the USA” sticker on them, under the assumption the entire product and its components were manufactured here in the States and they have purchased 100%  American made tools.  Somehow I find this misleading.
