This Wednesday readers “Ask the Guru” about “flashing tape” for a wall to roof transition, if a person could build an indoor skateboard training facility, and if Hansen has a catalog available.
DEAR POLE BARN GURU: I am having a steel pole barn built. Where a vertical wall meets the roof, the builder completed both surfaces, and the stick a “flashing tape” OVER the top of the two surfaces, and is telling me this is the finished product. I’ve only seen flashing tape used around windows BEFORE the siding is applied, and don’t have experience with metal buildings. I warned them before the adjoining building went up, that it need to be flashed (and even gave them a roll of flashing), but now we are approaching the end of the job, and that is how they intend to leave it. Am I missing something here, or is this an “acceptable” installation? In the meantime, they have covered the joint with another piece of metal, that looks nicer, but still, any water running down the wall will be relying on gorilla tape waterproof repair tape. SCOTT in DEER

DEAR SCOTT: No, this is not an acceptable installation. Done properly, lower roof steel is first applied. Pre-manufactured sidewall flashing is then placed over top of lower roof steel and up taller wall. If flashing does not cross a high rib of lower roof steel, sealant tape must be applied between lower roof steel and extreme edge of flashing. Wall steel is then applied to overlap vertical face of sidewall flashing, with Emseal expanding closures between bottom edge of wall steel and flashing.
DEAR POLE BARN GURU: Hello, I am considering building a skateboard training facility in a pole barn. Do you have any examples of buildings with taller ceilings? We are looking into putting a vert ramp in. And the ideal ceiling height would be about 23 to 26 feet. Thanks! RUFUS in NEW PALTZ
DEAR RUFUS: Thank you very much for your interest. We can easily accommodate wall heights up to 40′, so your height needs are well within realm of reality.
DEAR POLE BARN GURU: Do you have a catalog? CHERI in ROCKHOLDS
DEAR CHERI: Thank you for your interest in a new Hansen Pole Building.
As every building we provide is 100% custom designed to best meet wants and needs of each individual client, a true catalog would overfill a 53″ semi trailer.
