Pole building plans for your needs, from a riding arena or stall barn to garage packages, an equipment barn or metal pole barn and pole barn packages.

A self-help guide to understanding the process of planning your pole barn building

Understanding the process of having a pole building or pole barn constructed and how to build a pole building is, in our opinion, 80% of the project. Other than your home or what you drive, pole barn kits or pole barn packages will likely be the largest purchase you will ever make. While it only makes sense you would want the process to go smoothly, most people spend more time planning a one week vacation than they do making their new pole building plans.

Before you buy any of a myriad of pole barn kits or pole building packages, you need to answer some very basic questions about how YOU plan to use YOUR pole building. Is it a new riding arena or stall barn? One of our garage packages? A metal pole barn or an equipment barn? Many people forget their pole building is there to serve their needs. Making pole barn plans to fit those needs, is crucial. If you don't define what those needs are, you really don't know what will work for you.

You can avoid most mistakes if you will just take some time to determine what you really want your pole building to do for you. Think about when you purchased your home. Before you ever talked to a realtor, did you have an idea about the style of house you wanted, the square foot requirements, bedroom configurations, price, lot size, neighborhood, and so on? What about garage packages or a pole barn? We'll bet you did. Or how about when you purchased your computer? Didn't you give some thought to the type of computer you wanted, the memory requirements, speed, etc. before you bought it? You need to give the same consideration to your pole building. Whether it is a simple equipment barn, a new metal pole barn, a new riding arena or stall barn, the right pole building plans can solve how to build a pole building for you.

Here are some basics:

  • What's this building going to do for you? Not what it is - a workshop, storage, garage, business, church, airplane hangar - but what will it do? What in your life will be better if you construct your new pole building?

  • What size building do you think you will need? No matter what size you get, it will never be big enough!

  • What door sizes will you need for all your things? And will they be overhead doors or sliding doors?

  • Where should you place the doors? On the sides or on the ends?

  • How tall do you need the building to be?

  • Will you insulate the building?

  • Will you perhaps ever want to add on to the building? Would you add on to the length or to the width, or maybe both?

  • Would you want a second floor?

  • What overall appearance do you like? What colors?

  • What shape is the building going to be? Do you want a square building or should it be rectangular?

  • What about roof pitch? Should it match the slopes of existing or future buildings on the same site?

  • How about overhangs? Do you have doors to protect from rain or snow roof run-off? Do existing structures have overhangs which should be matched?

  • Are you going to use your building for a specific purpose: airplane hangar, horse arena, church, retail store, etc.? You'll have even more considerations based on the specific end use.

  • Will you need a building permit for your building?

  • Do you plan to erect the building yourself?

  • Do you plan to pour the concrete floor yourself? Or doesn't it need a concrete floor?

  • Will you need financing?
